The rally takes place at Makassar city and Takalar region in South Sulawesi.
Because of its location in the middle of the islands of Indonesia, it has a
long and rich tradition of trading with other Asian nations, the Arab countries,
India and the European trading countries - predominantly the Dutch but also the
English, and the Portuguese. One of the historic features of the city is the
Fortress Makassar, which was previously known as Fort Rotterdam and was built
by the Dutch in 1545.

Characteristics of stages: It is the most compact of all the APRC rallies -
total competitive distance of 222.82 km, with only 315.67 km of liaison. All
of the stages are located in the sugar plantations at Pabrik Gula (PG) Takalar,
have a hard clay base and will be slippery if there is rain. The longest stage,
Parang Baddo (24.10 km) has some tight corners, and is rough in some sections.

Since 1988 Palembang and South Sumatera had become one of the Rally Championship
location, STARCO RALLY, Conducte in 1988, as International Rally with one of National
Championship with special stages in Musi Landas, Malenia, Tebenan, Betung Barat,
Betung Timur, Patra Tani plantations and Unsri Complex. The Rally starts in Palembang
and finished in Jakarta with several foreign competitors.

From 1991 untill 1996, IMI DKI Jaya had annualy conducted National Championship round
at Gembala Sriwijaya plantations. IMI Jabar had also conducted it twice in Gembala
Sriwijaya Plantations in cooperation with IMI Sumsel.

In 1997 Gudang Garam Mesran Rally Championship was conducted by Trendy Promo Mandira,
three years later, in 2000 & 2001 the National Championship & Asia Zone
Championship was conducted in GembalaSriwijaya plantations.

In 2002, Makassar became the host of the FIA International Rally as a round of the Asian
Zone Rally Championship and under the observation of FIA in 2003 & 2004 became as
candidate for the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. It was first included in the APRC
calendar in 2005 and this year 2008 Rally of Indonesia in Makassar was run for 4th times
as FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship round 5 and became as WRC Candidate 2009 for WRC
round at 2010.
